Here are the four situations to qualify as a personal hardship:

  1. Unexpected medical emergencies: A person with severe illness, mental health, or injury who is not able to work or continue a job qualifies for the personal hardship grant. They became unable to work and earn in these situations. 
  2. Loss of income or employment: In a job transition, loss of income, significant pay cut, and furlough are common. These situations qualify as a personal hardship.
  3. Housing or eviction risk: When someone receives an eviction notice, faces foreclosure, or cannot afford rent. It put their main home in danger, which made them stressed. 
  4. Family or personal crises: Major personal issues create emotional stress or financial issues. These hardships include a breakup, the death of a family member, or the person needing to become a full-time caregiver for someone.

Which Emergency Cash Assistance Grants Are Available Right Now?

There are several government grants, charity-based grants, or community grants that remain available in times of need. Every state receives grants after a specified time period to help low-income families with food or bill costs. For example, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program provides facilities on EBT cards to help them purchase nutritious food. Apart from the government, non-profit and charity relief funds provide emergency aid. 

What Housing and Utility Hardship Programs Can Help?

The number of communities developing emergency rental programs to provide landlords with enough funds to reduce the risk of house eviction. Here are the three documents that are required for a hardship grant application:

  1. Proof of identity and income: A government-issued passport, ID card, or driving license is required. Recent utility bills or rental agreement, along with proof of income (like tax returns, pay slips, entitlement letters, or benefit statements are also needed.
  2. Supporting hardship documents: The specific event or circumstance that results in financial crisis needs to be reported in supporting documents. These documents include, signed statement from a social worker, medical invoices or bills, job termination letters, or statements that show a reduction in pay. In the case of housing grants, emergency accommodation, and relocation receipts are necessary. A death certificate in case of death, or a police report in legal separation or domestic violence, or documentation of childcare expenses or child support arrangements is requested in a personal or family crisis. 
  3. Bank and financial statements: The granters usually ask for recent bank statements, from the past three months, for all accounts (checking, savings, and investments) to show the current balance and essential expenses.

Who Can Apply for Hardship Grants?

A person with low income who’s struggling for the basic needs of life is eligible to apply for a hardship grant. Applicants need to prove that their income is below a specific limit. The threshold is based on the federal poverty level or their state’s median income. The families or individuals who suffer from unseen events can also apply for hardship grants or emergency aid to help them before they even apply for it. A population with unique challenges like education, disability, or single parents is also eligible for hardship grants. 

How Can You Improve Your Chances of Getting Approved?

Here are the three ways to improve the chances of getting approved while applying for a hardship grant:

  1. Submit clear evidence of hardship: Provide them with the verifiable documents to clear things in one shot. These documents include financial documents, income documents, and the crisis report. 
  2. Explain your situation briefly but strongly: Make a concise, honest, and impactful statement to mention the crisis situation and emergency help. It reduces delays in the grant funds.
  3. Apply to multiple grants at once: Don’t rely on a single grant; reach out to local grants like nonprofit organizations or local social welfare to access emergency funds. This approach improves the chances of getting aid more quickly.
