Rick Middleton’s career as a professional writer includes 30 years of experience writing and preparing grant proposals that have raised millions of dollars for worthy causes. 

 Rick managed federal and state proposals as a program officer for Central Michigan University and Saginaw Valley State University. He’s submitted proposals to the NIH; HRSA; SAMHSA; NSF; the Departments of Education, Agriculture, Justice; the EPA; the State of Michigan; and numerous other funding sources. He has also taught grant-writing concepts to faculty and students at these universities.  

His writing experience extends to fields as diverse as publishing, advertising, journalism, and philanthropic communication. As donor communications writer (and later Director of Marketing) for World Relief, Rick wrote grant proposals, print newsletters, the organization’s annual report, long-form pieces for magazines, and various other collateral pieces. As Donor Communications Manager at the Cleveland Clinic, Rick coordinated the communications efforts of the institution as they implemented their first-ever capital campaign. He authored web content, campaign case statements, brochures, fund-raising proposals, direct mail, and speeches for Clinic leaders. He also served as Assistant Editor of the Cleveland Clinic Vistas magazine, which featured stories of grateful patients receiving world-class medical care.  

Rick has also written grant proposals, direct mail, campaign case statements, newsletters, and various collateral pieces for clients including UCLA, Dow Chemical, the University of Michigan, John Carroll University, Antietam Health System, University Hospitals of Cleveland, the American Jewish Committee, and many others.  

Rick has a Master of Arts in English Composition and Communication from Central Michigan University and resides in Saginaw, Michigan.
